if you shot a missile off then you pad missed your current ball....and THEN your missile hit a new-ball brick that deploys a new ball, would it be too late, or would you survive?

If the new ball is released before the ball goes off the bottom of the screen you'll be good to go. Same deal with getting an [N] powerup too.
